What is Emotional Regulation?

The ability for individuals to control their emotions and keeping emotions in balance in a socially adaptive way. This can be a challenging skill to develop. It takes time and practice.

What are The Zones of Regulation?

BLUE Zone – Your body is running slow, such as when you are tired, sick, sad or bored.

GREEN Zone – Like a green light, you are “good to go.” You body may feel happy, calm and focused.

YELLOW Zone – This zone describes when you start to lose control (but still have some control), such as when you are frustrated, anxious, worried, silly or surprised. Use caution when you are in this zone.

RED Zone – This zone is for extreme emotions such as anger, terror and aggression. When you are in this zone, you are out of control, have trouble making good decisions and must STOP!

There are no good or bad zones. Every zone is appropriate in different situations.

So what can you do at home to support your kids?

  • Validate your child’s feelings – it is okay to feel the way they feel. For example, it is okay for everyone to feel angry, but being angry does not mean they can punch or hit another person.

  • When you watch movies or read books, ask your kids how the characters respond in different situations

  • Be a role model. Let your kids know how you feel and you can calm down.
